My love for Pastries & Baking...

After giving myself a break from the kitchen for 2 years... I've finally realized that I miss it so much! Yupe, I miss slogging for hours in the kitchen. I guess I understand that when one has a job or career, passion is needed and most importantly, it must not feel like a chore! Food has always been a part of my life. My Dad has an excellent taste for local food, My Mom is one of the best chef I've ever met, and My Big Brother makes yummie cheesecakes. Even My Boyfriend Garth, he's definitely my competitor when it comes to Savoury. As a child, I remember when my mom used to go shopping at IKEA in Singpapore, she'd sign me up for this class where they teach kids to bake while she does her shopping. I remember those gingerbread cookies very well, oh the smell of all those spices: ginger, cinnamon, feels like X'mas in June. haha... I also remember sitting in the kitchen, watching my mom prepare those Nonya dishes: Buah Keluak, pounding the Rempah and my all-time favorite, Salted veggie duck soup, Yummie. Definitely a woman with lots of patience, which i admire! Then I grew up and realized that God gave me the gift of creativity, Pastries... It was my dream to be enrolled in CIA, (no no, not the Central Intelligence Agency!) Culinary Institute of America! The world's premier culinary college. Well, I guess I wasn't dreaming hard enough and I ended up in SHATEC, a culinary school in Singapore. No regrets as I had the opportunity to represent Singapore in WACS 2004 World Junior Culinary Challenge held in Dublin, Ireland. It was an exhilarating experience for me. In the last 2 years, my travels around the world has definitely opened my eyes to see different Cultures and learning their Foods. I've learned that the Japanese are really taking over the pastry scene with their creative ideas for cakes. You look at them and you wouldn't feel like eating cos they are so pretty. Hahaha... This has inspired me to go back to where my passion is: Cakes, Chocolate, Sweets, Cookies. No women can deny that they do not enjoy either one of these at some point or another. I would even speak for Men too, look at most chefs out there now. Next few blogs, I'll be showing you desserts & cakes I have created in the kitchen of Grand Hyatt Singapore & my humble home...
